A new species of Suturoglypta from Colombia (Caenogastropoda, Columbellidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Simone,Luiz Ricardo L.; Gracia C.,Adriana.
Suturoglypta procera, a new species of Columbellidae, is conchologically described for the Caribbean coast of Colombia. The generic attribution is mainly based on the presence of teeth at outer lip, the long siphon and the deep suture. The new species differs from the other congeners in being elongated, almost turriform, in lacking shell pigmentation, and by poorer sculpture. A syntype of the Caribbean Astyris verrilli Dall is also figured.

Anatomical study on Myoforceps aristatus, an invasive boring bivalve in S.E. Brazilian coast (Mytilidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Simone,Luiz Ricardo L.; Gonçalves,Eric Pedro.
The bivalve Myoforceps aristatus (Dillwyn, 1817), also known as Lithophaga aristata, have been recently collected in the coasts of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil; a species that bores shells of other mollusks. This occurrence has been interpreted as an invasion of this species, originally from the Caribbean. The distinguishing character of the species is the posterior extensions of the shell crossing with each other. Because specimens with this character have also been collected in the Pacific Ocean, they all have been considered a single species. However, it is possible that more than one species may be involved in such worldwide distribution. With the objective of providing full information based on Atlantic specimens, a complete anatomical...

Anatomy of Phyllodina persica (Bivalvia: Tellinidae), and its first occurrence in southeastern Brazilian waters Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Marques,Rodrigo Cesar; Simone,Luiz Ricardo L..
This study presents a detailed anatomy of a rare Western Atlantic tellin, Phyllodina persica, under a comparative scenario. Some characters are shared with other tellinids such as the large hemipalps compared to gills; gills with outer demibranch with a single lamella absent from the pericardial region; the type-V stomach associated with the style sac conjoined with the proximal intestine, and distal intestine presenting a dorsal and ventral group of loops, separated by the transverse muscle. The stomach presents a laterally enlarged typhlosole, although shallow, without flange in the margins. This feature is not found in other tellinid species. Another noteworthy feature in the stomach is the aperture of both caeca, which are larger than the left pouch...

Comparative morphology among representatives of main taxa of Scaphopoda and basal protobranch Bivalvia (Mollusca) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Simone,Luiz Ricardo L..
This study deals with detailed morphology and anatomy of 4 species of Scaphopoda and 5 species of protobranch Bivalvia. Both classes are traditionally grouped in the taxon Diasoma, which has been questioned by different methodologies, such as molecular and developmental. This study is developed under a phylogenetic methodology with the main concern in performing it in an intelligible and testable methodology. The analyzed Scaphopoda species came from the Brazilian coast and belong to the family Dentaliidae [(1) Coccodentalium carduus; (2) Paradentalium disparile] and Gadiliidae; [(3) Polyschides noronhensis, n. sp. from Fernando de Noronha Archipelago; (4) Gadila braziliensis]. These species represent the main branches of the class Scaphopoda. From...

First record of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis (Bivalvia, Mytilidae) in Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Belz,Carlos Eduardo; Simone,Luiz Ricardo L.; Silveira Júnior,Nelson; Baggio,Rafael Antunes; Gernet,Marcos de Vasconcellos; Birckolz,Carlos João.
Abstract The genus Mytilus comprises a large number of bivalve mollusk species distributed throughout the world and many of these species are considered invasive. In South America, many introductions of species of this genus have already taken place, including reports of hybridization between them. Now, the occurrence of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis is reported for the first time from the Brazilian coast. Several specimens of this mytilid were found in a shellfish growing areas in Florianópolis and Palhoça, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Morphological analysis of the shells and molecular analysis through sequencing of the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) confirmed the taxonomic identification. The species is known for its great...

First record of Thylaeodus (Gastropoda: Vermetidae) from the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, with the description of a new species Rev. Bras. Zool.
Spotorno,Paula; Simone,Luiz Ricardo L..
The vermetid Thylaeodus equatorialis sp. nov. is endemic to the São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago, located at the mid equatorial Atlantic Ocean. The species is closely related to Thylaeodus rugulosus (Monterosato, 1878), as indicated by similar shell characters, coloration of the soft parts, and feeding tube scars. However, T. equatorialis sp. nov. mainly differs from T. rugulosus in the operculum/aperture diameter ratio (~79% versus 100%), by having well developed pedal tentacles and fewer egg capsules in brooding females. In addition, the new species has the following unique characteristics: size almost twice as large (shell, tube aperture, erect feeding tube, protoconch and egg capsules) as the other Atlantic species; unusual method of brooding egg...

Morphological comparison between Doryteuthis pleii and D. sanpaulensis (Cephalopoda, Myopsida, Loliginidae) from Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Migliavacca,Paulo Presti; Simone,Luiz Ricardo L..
Abstract The distinction of squid species in the genus Doryteuthis is not easy due to their morphological similarity, lack of conspicuous specific characters, and overlap geographical occurrence. This difficulty has leading to an almost exclusive molecular approach, and a premature neglect of the morpho-anatomy. To emphasize that the squid phenotypic features can be useful to identify, as well as to perform any comparative analyses (such as taxonomy and phylogeny), two close species were selected as outset. Doryteuthis pleii and D. sanpaulensis are common sympatric squids in Brazilian waters, commonly used in fisheries, not so difficult to distinguish by external features of the adult specimens. The samples were analyzed from biometric data to dissections,...

Morphological study on Littorina Flava (King & Broderip) from Brazil (Caenogastropoda, Littorinidae) Zoologia
Simone,Luiz Ricardo L..
A detailed morphological study of the littorinid Littorina flava (King & Broderip), from Venezuelan and Brazilian coasts, is given and commented. a considerable degree of shell characters variation was found, mainly in color and sculpture. The pallial cavity presents normal fashion of mesogastropods, without any detectable morphological modification for the long air-exposure. The digestive system present odontophore muscles very similar to those of the cerithioideans and hydrobioideans; the radula, however, is enormously long; the stomach lacks differentiate style sac. The penis is characteristic in lacking annex glands. The pallial oviduct has no jelly gland, and has a well developed bursa copulatrix and vaginal tube.

Nassarius foveolatus (Gastropoda, Nassariidae), a new record of an exotic species in Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Gernet,Marcos de Vasconcellos; Belz,Carlos Eduardo; Baggio,Rafael Antunes; Birckolz,Carlos João; Santos,Elizângela da Veiga; Simone,Luiz Ricardo L.; Abbate,Daniel; Metri,Rafael.
Abstract Exotic species are those that occur in an area beyond their natural limit and they are considered invasive when they cause harm to the economy, environment, or human health. In coastal environments, ballast water and inlays on the hull and other parts of vessels are the main ways of introducing invasive aquatic alien species. Nassarius foveolatus (Dunker, 1847) is native from the Central and East Indian Ocean to the East China Sea. The first specimens (empty shells) of N. foveolatus were collected manually on November 11, 2017 on the Rocio footbridge, located in the Paranaguá Estuarine Complex, on the coast of the State of Paraná, southern Brazil. Posteriorly, live specimens were collected in other localities of this bay. It is already possible to...

Phenotypic features of Helicina variabilis (Gastropoda: Neritimorpha) from Minas Gerais, Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Simone,Luiz Ricardo L..
Abstract Helicina variabilis Wagner, 1827 (Neritimorpha, Helicinidae) is redescribed based on a sample collected in Nanuque, northern Minas Gerais, Brazil. The species description, previously based only on the shell, is expanded to the phenotypic features. The study revealed absorption of the internal shell whorls; a diaphragm muscle connected to the floor of the pallial cavity; a monoaulic pallial oviduct, with the female genital aperture inside the anal aperture, and the lack of a seminal receptacle and provaginal sac; and the pleural ganglia of the nerve ring connected with each other. The significance of these findings is discussed in the light of current taxonomic and phylogenetic knowledge.

Redescription of Hiatella meridionalis d'Orbigny, 1846 (Mollusca, Bivalvia, Hiatellidae) from Argentina Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Simone,Luiz Ricardo L.; Penchaszadeh,Pablo E..
The redescription of Hiatella meridionalis (d’Orbigny, 1846) is provided as first attempt to improve the systematics of the genus in the regions of Atlantic and western Pacific. This reanalysis is based on specimens collected in the vicinity of the type localities and is based on detailed morphology of samples that some researches consider a single, wide ranging species. From the morphological characters, the more interesting are: a high quantity of papillae at incurrent siphon; the retractor muscles of siphon divided in two bundles; the small size of the palps; the muscular ring in the stomach; and the zigzag fashion of the short intestinal loops. These characters distinguish the species from the other hiatellids so far examined. Type material of the...

Two new species of Terebra (Gastropoda, Conoidea) from Colombia Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Simone,Luiz Ricardo L.; Gracia C.,Adriana.
Two new species of the genus Terebra are described conchologically to the Atlantic coast of Colombia. The species are Terebra colombiensis and T. sterigmoides. They are differentiable mainly because of their sculpture, protoconch and spire angle. They are part of a group of Western Atlantic terebrids informally called "T. doellojuradoi complex" and differ from the Brazilian species in having well-developed pair of folds at columella. This character approaches the species described here to the Argentinean T. doellojuradoi.
